Here at St David’s we recognise the importance of delivering specific services for
your Camelids as they are unique. Services which we can provide include:
- General health checks and identifying problems.
- Castration
To prevent/reduce aggressiveness in males and to avoid unwanted Crias.
- Teeth rasping
Camelids can commonly develop dental problems, this will affect their ability to
chew and digest feed efficiently. Their teeth need routine rasping as they continually
grow. Dental problems are particularly associated with Camelids with an overshot
lower jaw. Fighting teeth in males may also need rasping as these are very sharp
and can cause serious damage to other Camelids in fights.
- Advice on worming protocols
Camelids are very susceptible to diseases caused by gut worms. Do you have a paddock
rotation and treatment protocol in place?
- Faecal testing
For worm eggs to assess the need for treatment. Some tests may need to be done at
a specialist laboratory, particularly if the Camelid has a current scouring problem.
If this is the case, we can aid interpretation of those results and dispense treatment.
- Lameness work ups
Did you know Camelids can develop specific foot problems because their feet are
designed for a different terrain/climate to the UK? We can also X-ray lame Camelids
to identify any bony abnormalities and provide treatment in certain circumstances.
- Foot trimming
We can trim overgrown claws.
- Anaesthesia or sedation
Anaesthesia or sedation can be provided for Camelids that are very stressed by and
are uncooperative to handling, if they require vital treatments.
If you require a service not listed above please do not hesitate to ask us.
